Legume options for summer-active pastures in a temperate rainfall environment of south-eastern Australia

چکیده

Context High-quality, summer-active pastures could improve meat production in south-eastern Australia by facilitating livestock finishing over summer, with legumes critical for enhancing the nutritive value of pasture mixes. Available vary their ability to withstand moisture stress and grazing. Aims We aimed identify suitable a summer–autumn system. Methods tested pure swards 12 cultivars across eight legume species replicated small-plot experiments at Goulburn Bombala, New South Wales, assessing productivity, persistence warm-season characteristics 2–3 years. Key results Lucerne (Medicago sativa) was clearly most productive during summer outperformed clovers (Trifolium spp.) terms productivity throughout experimental period both sites, except autumn 2021 after high rainfall March. Caucasian clover (T. ambiguum) also highly persistent sites. Talish tumens) strawberry fragiferum) were more than white repens) red pratense). White recovered strongly under drought, whereas established rapidly but showed less capacity post-drought recovery. Hybrid × least legume. Alternative sometimes had slightly lower values clover; distinctly values. Conclusions performed best several productive, period. Implications Talish, warrant further investigation inclusion Australia.

Interannual Variability of South-eastern African Summer Rainfall. Part 1: Relationships with Air-sea Interaction Processes

This paper investigates the role that air–sea interaction processes may play in interannual variability of south-eastern African summer rainfall. The principal spatial modes of south-eastern African summer rainfall are first identified using principal component analysis. Four modes are retained. The most important mode of variability is found to represent rainfall variability over most of the d...

Towards SMOS validation in south-eastern Australia

The upcoming Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission of the European Space Agency will be the first satellite dedicated to the measurement of soil moisture. It will measure soil moisture for the top 5 cm at a spatial resolution of 35 to 50 km. Comparison of the soil moisture data from SMOS with insitu monitoring network measurements across areas the size of a SMOS footprint will play a ...

Avian influenza infection dynamics under variable climatic conditions, viral prevalence is rainfall driven in waterfowl from temperate, south-east Australia

Understanding Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) infection dynamics in wildlife is crucial because of possible virus spill over to livestock and humans. Studies from the northern hemisphere have suggested several ecological and environmental drivers of AIV prevalence in wild birds. To determine if the same drivers apply in the southern hemisphere, where more irregular environmental conditions prevail,...

Seasonal Limitations to Nutrition of Sheep and Beef Cattle in High Rainfall Areas of South-eastern Australia

The cattle and sheep industries of Australia are almost entirely dependent on grazing animals. Weston and Hogan (1973) estimated that less than 5% of the feed consumed by domestic ruminants in this country is derived from sown grain crops, and only 5 or 6% from conserved forage. Consequently effective management and use of pastures are of prime importance for efficient animal production. Althou...
